J J Fitzpatrick has been training dogs professionally since 1980 when he qualified as a Royal Air Force Police dog handler. He retired from the Service in 2013 as the Senior Instructor, Joint Service Dog School, at the world-renowned Defence Animal Centre, in the rank of Warrant Officer.
During the period 2010-2013 he headed the Young Military Working Dog Development Programme, which involved the sourcing, selection, development and training of specially-bred puppies from whelping to licensing as operational Military Working Dogs and Service Police Dogs.
Since retiring from the RAF Police he works as a professional dog trainer and behaviourist. He is a member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, a Canine Practitioner with the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association and a member of the Pet Education Training and Behaviour Council. He is Vice-Chairman of the British Police and Services Canine Association.
He holds a Foundation Degree in Canine Behaviour and Training awarded by Hull University and a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education) awarded by Wolverhampton University.
He now shares his knowledge and experience, accrued and refined during 35 years spent training and developing Military Working Dogs and thousands of family pets with you, to ensure your new puppy becomes a happy, balanced, valued and much-loved member of your family.

This book is essential reading for anyone about to buy or having just bought a new puppy.
There is nothing worse than being confronted by a book full of jargon but this book is a joy to read. It is easy to pick up and put down when you have a spare five minutes and the information is written is very clear, easy and with little bit of humor.
Every issue of rearing a puppy is covered, including socialization, house training, playing games, dealing with anti-social behaviour etc. Its common sense approach fills you with confidence and helps you to understand the priorities in dog training
I have been reading educating Alice while taking my puppy 'Teddy' to training classes with JJ Fitzpatrick. The book is fantastic and a huge help to refer back to when I (not Teddy) am struggling with a particular method of training. It has given me confidence to continue with our training classes and given me more of an understanding from how Teddy sees his world. I love how the book has been written step-by-step instructions and straight talking advice with lots of humour making it a very easy, enjoyable and informative read. I would highly recommend you buy this book if considering a puppy or any dog in general.
I brought this book, after buying my puppy Bella, prior to starting the puppy foundation course with Fitz and honestly wish that i had purchased it sooner! I am currently half way through the book and can say that this book is like a bible accompanying you with your new puppy! We are incredibly pleased on how Bella responds to the methods that Fitz suggests you use (and adapt) from the book, just as we are incredibly happy with how Bella is in her training classes! Fitz's humour and wit are evident on each page of the book and add to the book, making it an incredible read! Would definitely reccomend - you will not be dissapointed.
This book is a must for anyone who is considering getting a puppy either for the first time or starting over again. This book starts right at the beginning unlike others, it actually gives info on how to find the right dog for you, information on how to select the right breeder which I've never seen before with fantastic advise on what you should be looking for when choosing a pup. This is followed by all the things you should be doing before your pups arrives, a lot of things you never think of. It explains everything you want to train your pup to do & things you would not think of doing, which are needed. It is well written & the author is very matter of fact which makes it easy to read while still been enjoyable & everything he writes makes perfect sense.
Each section is clearly set out, easy to follow & includes lots of real life examples of how to put your training in to practice in the real world which is what is lacking in others I've read. If you only read one training book then make sure it's this one.
I have read quite a number of puppy and dog training books, but I knew this one was different when I saw that the foreword on the rules of training a pup was written from the point of view of the pup. The content is excellent. It’s clear and easy to follow and it seems to cover everything I need to know to train my pup. It is very detailed so it doesn’t leave you to fill in the blanks and guess at what you should actually do in practice. The use of humour breaks up the serious business really well. I think the last line of the book sums it up where it says “treat your puppy with love and respect and they will make you proud.” I have no doubt that if you train your pup according to this book that they will.

This book is a must have for anyone considering buying a puppy. In fact even if your puppy is all grown up, this book still has a place on your bookshelf.
I have been around dogs my entire life which is fast approaching 60 years. I have worked with dogs both as an amature and professional for a considerable chunk of my life.
This book is superb. I have taken aspects from the book which I am now implementing in teaching with my clients.
Fitz writes as he speaks using his wonderful “Scouse” sense of humour. This book is so easy to read and although does cover academic points he does not lose readers by trying to be too highbrow.
I thoroughly recommend this book. Fitz has a knowledge which is far greater than most. He has served as a military handler, instructor and trainer. He also has held a lifelong interest and love of dogs and what makes them tick. Fitz also has a degree in canine psychology.
Do yourself a favour and do your dogs a favour too and buy this book, you won't regret it.

Great book. It does jump around a bit on the sequence of the commands (cues). Valuable information if your pup is a year old or less.
